Richard Boyer has been involved in business for most of his life. His family owned a chain of hardware stores in the Los Angeles area as he was growing up and, beginning as a grade schooler, he spent weekends and summers working there under the supervision of his father. Later, his family developed housing tracts in Riverside and the Moreno Valley and, once again, Richard spent most of his free time learning every aspect of construction and development.
Richard graduated from San Diego State University in 1978, with a AB degree in Industrial Studies. With a wealth of practical experience in construction and development, and an education emphasizing architectural drawing, industrial photography, and general business, Richard took a position with a fledgling solar panel contractor in Solana Beach. He began as a draftsman, preparing construction drawings for the company’s solar installations, and was eventually promoted to general manager. Richard left the solar construction company to engage in a real estate investment partnership, and after five years returned to the construction industry and began working as an estimator for a commercial paint and wall covering contractor in National City. He later took a position as an estimator with a commercial general contractor in San Diego, where he remained through law school at the University of San Diego.
Richard graduated with a JD from the University of San Diego in 1987, and, with his construction experience, was a natural to work in the area of construction defect litigation, which was beginning to pick up momentum in San Diego County. He was sworn in to the State Bar of California and became an associate at Butz, Lucas, Dunn & Enright, in downtown San Diego in 1987. He remained there until 1999, handling cases involving personal injury, professional liability, product defect, soil subsidence, premises liability, and, of course, construction defect litigation. Richard became a shareholder of the firm in 1993.
Richard and three of his partners struck out on their own in 1999, and in February of that year formed the firm, Lucas, Mullany, Boyer & Haverkamp. In contrast to the Butz firm’s insurance defense focus, the new firm sought a more specialized niche in elder abuse litigation, real estate, and serious personal injury. Ms. Mullany left in 2003, to take a position at another firm, and Richard left the firm in 2005, to start The Law Office of Richard L. Boyer, APC.
